Critical Investigation tutorial 16/10/15

Learner response to Ignite – typed up as requested. Excellent reflection and thoughtful paragraph on continuing this into critical investigation.

Critical Investigation proposal – done, detailed and looks impressive. The excellent research over the summer has really paid off here. You've also been absolutely clear about what you want to study from the very start which is very helpful.

You've got several question drafts – I’d go with the middle one for now, we can adjust it later if we need to. You may find the research takes you in a certain direction or we need to add something to the question.

Angle/hypothesis – these can work. For angle, I would choose one side or the other to be your main angle but obviously cover both in the essay.

Linked production – needs to be added to proposal but your idea is absolutely fine. A horror movie opening is definitely do-able and can be done effectively on a low budget.

Loads of MIGRAIN research in your summer project post, really has helped here, brilliant to see.

For SHEP – social is good but copied and pasted, make sure you can articulate this in your own words. Economic is just superb – I’d never realised the correlation between economic downturns and horror movies being popular. For historical, you've got nothing – and this is the easy one! Look at audience pleasures over time – analyse a horror movie from the 1980s. For political, try and link it to your question – so moral panic, whether films should be banned, stuff like that.

For issues/debates/theories, pretty good but you need to link them to your topic more explicitly. In particular, research loads of audience theories because this will link to your topic of audience pleasures.

For the research plan, you've got a good start but will need much more detail over the next few weeks, particularly with regards to books. Copy it into your Notes and Quotes document but before doing any research do some more on the research plan, turn it into a huge list of potential sources.

Publish this on your blog with your next steps in this project.

- add in more in my research plan - look at more books

- complete the audience theories

- start on my notes and quotes
